As a Sacramento motherhood photographer, we meet many moms who have thousands of photos of their kids but very few with them. Kristina knows that feeling well. She spends her working life making sure other people’s biggest days run beautifully. As a wedding and event planner, she is usually behind the scenes.
We’re Milou & Olin, a women’s portrait studio in Sacramento. We love photographing women like Kristina. They make everything happen for everyone else, yet rarely appear in the photographs themselves. A motherhood session changes that. More importantly, it gives your children photographs that include you too.

The photo you never get when you’re the one holding everything together
If you’re the default parent and a business owner, you probably know the pattern.
Your camera roll holds thousands of photos of your children. However, there may be very few photos of you with them.
Wanting to change that isn’t vanity.
In fact, being in your family’s photographs is deeply meaningful. One day, your children won’t only want pictures of themselves. They’ll want to see you there too.

We follow the kids — we don’t fight them
Traditional family photography can feel stiff. Often, everyone gets told to sit still and smile.
We take a different approach.
Instead, we build the session around play, movement, and real interaction. That might mean a tickle, a whispered joke, or a cuddle. It might also mean a child climbing straight into Mom’s lap.
Then, we gently direct from there.
Because of that approach, your children don’t need to perform for the camera. They can simply interact with you.
For a mom who manages logistics all day, that’s an important shift. She doesn’t have to run the session.
She simply gets to be part of it.

Inside Kristina’s session
We built Kristina’s session around how she and her children naturally interact.
Rather than lining everyone up, we let their connection guide the photographs.
Kristina laughed while her kids climbed on her. Then came a quiet forehead-to-forehead moment. A few minutes later, the youngest was upside down and giggling.
Those moments said far more about this family than a posed smile could.
We also chose a clean, editorial black-and-white treatment. As a result, nothing distracts from their expressions or connection.
No forced smiles. No stiff rows.
Just this chapter of their family as it actually feels.

The styling stayed simple for the same reason. Coordinated denim and soft studio light created a timeless foundation.
Therefore, the clothes won’t become the first thing you notice years from now.
The expressions will.

What she walked away with
Kristina didn’t leave with another folder of images destined for her phone.
Instead, she left with photographs she was actually in.
Those portraits now hold something her camera roll couldn’t. They show her relationship with her children from a different point of view.
Many of our motherhood clients turn favorite images into framed wall art or a printed album.
That way, the photographs become part of everyday family life.
Of course, every client decides which images matter most.
Our job is to make sure she has plenty worth keeping.

What we do differently
Most portrait sessions end when you receive a gallery.
We start earlier and think further ahead.
First, we consider the relationship we’re photographing. Then, we think about how the finished images should feel.
We also consider where those images might eventually live.
Our own portrait artists create, style, and finish every portrait. We don’t rely on AI or generic templates.
Instead, we use intentional lighting, thoughtful direction, and hand-finished imagery.
Ultimately, we want the photographs to look like your family. We don’t want them to look like a trend from one particular year.
If you’ve spent years behind the camera, we’d love to help change that. Start with a complimentary consultation, and we’ll talk through what you want to preserve.
Where we photograph motherhood sessions
Our studio is in Sacramento. Families travel to us from Roseville, Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Granite Bay, and nearby communities.
Studio sessions give us consistent light throughout the year. Because of that, we can focus on expression and connection.
However, some families have a location that’s part of their story. In those cases, we can also discuss an on-location session.

Frequently asked questions
I never like photos of myself — will this work?
It’s designed for exactly that mom. The session is fully directed, and the whole point isn’t a perfect pose — it’s you, in the frame, with your kids. Most moms who dread the camera end up loving these most.
What if my kids won’t cooperate?
That’s the session working as designed. We plan for real kid energy and direct through play — the candid, in-between moments are usually the ones moms love most.
What should we wear?
Simple, coordinated (not matchy) pieces in a shared palette photograph best and stay timeless. We’ll guide you on wardrobe before the session.
Do you photograph motherhood sessions outside Sacramento?
Yes — moms come to our Sacramento studio from Roseville, Folsom, El Dorado Hills, and across the region, with on-location sessions available when the setting is part of the story.
Ready to finally be in the picture?
