Sometimes we like to remind ourselves and our clients what matters most to us; why we do what we do. Weddings are such a giant production: a crazy collaboration of family members and opinions, the creation of an event that is emotionally taxing and personally meaningful, and all the pressures that come with societal norms and expectations.
In a world of glittering wedding Pinterest boards and blogs filled with fantastical wedding inspiration, there is so much pressure to make your wedding live up to the intensely detailed soirees you assume everyone else is having. And while we enjoy shooting a unique boutonniere and themed drink straws, that isn’t why we’re so excited to be cataloguing your big day. Because when it comes down to it, we’re photojournalists.
For those of you who think that is a fancier name for a photographer, I assure you there is some serious stuff behind the moniker. A photojournalist is not simply putting you and your details in the best light, but crafting a story through photographs that archives the best day of your life. Even though we’ll style the chicest vignette for your wedding shoes and gush over your place settings, the photos we’re proudest of are more emotional: the bittersweet, proud smile on a father’s face as he walks his daughter down the aisle, the insane dance moves your cousin is busting out on the dancefloor, the way you giggle with your bridesmaids while you drink mimosas and talk about how nervous your significant other is right now…. those are the moments that will make you cry when you look at an album with your children; those are the images you’ll treasure when you look back to see your entire family in one room, celebrating love.
So if you’re overwhelmed because you can’t really afford the ultra-stylish chargers, or someone’s relative is pressuring you into a tradition you don’t really think is relevant, take a step back and think about the day you want us to capture. Make yourself happy and create a day about love, so we can catch that gorgeous smile of yours for generations to come.
Remember that we’re chronicling life – your life – and that means the most to us.
We were inspired to write this by a completely heartwarming article written by a fellow photographer that summed up how we feel about weddings in a few more words. It’s definitely worth a read!
